The AS400 Migration Playbook: What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

Group

Oct 19th, 2026 | 1 PM ET

Migrating from AS400 to a modern ERP can look straightforward. Replace the legacy applications. Move the data. Rebuild the integrations. Then retire the old environment. However, AS400 migration rarely works that neatly. Many IBM i environments have evolved over decades. They may contain RPG and COBOL programs, custom DB2 data structures, batch jobs, EDI interfaces, spool files, reports, and deeply embedded business logic. More importantly, much of that logic may no longer be fully documented. As a result, replacing AS400 can quickly become much more than an ERP implementation.

Then comes the architecture problem. Traditional AS400 environments often rely on batch processing, flat files, direct database access, scheduled jobs, and tightly connected custom programs. Modern ERP systems operate differently. They increasingly rely on APIs, event-driven workflows, middleware, automation, and near-real-time processing. At the same time, legacy data may not map cleanly to modern ERP data models. Custom RPG logic may not have direct equivalents either. Even experienced users can struggle when highly optimized green-screen processes become modern workflows with more steps. Therefore, a successful AS400-to-cloud ERP migration requires companies to rethink processes, data, integrations, customizations, user experience, and enterprise architecture together.

In this webinar, we will explore the hidden risks behind AS400 modernization and cloud ERP migration. First, we will examine how to discover what the existing IBM i environment actually does. Next, we will explore RPG customizations, DB2 data migration, batch architecture, integrations, historical data, and business process dependencies. We will also discuss the difficult coexistence period when AS400 and the new ERP must operate together. Finally, we will present a practical AS400 migration playbook. The goal is not simply to move old functionality to newer technology. Instead, organizations must determine what to retain, redesign, standardize, archive, replace, and retire before decades of legacy complexity follow them into the cloud.

Learning Objectives:

Identify the hidden applications, RPG/COBOL programs, batch jobs, DB2 data structures, integrations, reports, and business rules that can complicate an AS400 migration.

Understand why AS400 data, custom logic, and batch-oriented processes may not map directly to a modern cloud ERP architecture.

Evaluate RPG customizations and determine what to retain, replace with standard ERP functionality, redesign, move outside the ERP, or retire.

Assess the architectural differences between legacy IBM i environments and API-driven, event-driven, near-real-time cloud ERP platforms.

Develop strategies for historical data, integrations, user productivity, cutover, reconciliation, and AS400/cloud ERP coexistence.

Apply a structured AS400 migration playbook covering discovery, decoding, rationalization, architecture, ERP selection, transformation, migration, and eventual decommissioning.
